ABOUT RUK RAKAGANNO –The Tree Society of Sri Lanka

Ruk Rakaganno was formed in 1975 by a small band of nature lovers, concerned about the degradation and destruction of the natural forests in Sri Lanka. Their primary aim was to protect these forests by raising awareness about the value of trees and encouraging the planting of indigenous species. Since its inception the society has adopted the role of guardian and has participated in advocacy issues concerning the country’s trees and forests, in addition to promoting and actively participating in tree planting throughout the country. As a national NGO, the Society is represented on various committees dealing with forestry and biodiversity. Ruk Raks is an approved charity under the Inland Revenue Act and is registered as a Society with the Registrar of Companies and the Central Environment Authority.

HOW YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE
Ruk Raks charges between R. 3000.00-Rs. 5000.00 to plant 10 trees. This cost variance is due to varying areas of planting.

A planting and awareness project has just begun in schools and coastal areas in the tsunami affected areas in the South. Contribution could be made towards this project for planting trees in denominations of ten.

In Colombo - finding areas is more difficult because it involves getting planting and maintenance permission from the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) or the Urban Development Authority. However, Ruk Rakaganno can arrange the necessary permission if you are keen to plant in public areas, such as streets and public parks.

Better still if you have a place that you can provide for planting, Ruks Raks are more than happy to do it at that location. You or your organisation will then be responsible for maintenance of the plants.

Name boards could be placed displaying the name of the individual/organisation sponsoring the planting. Again permission has to be obtained from the CMC where the plants are on public land. Ruk Raks could contact the CMC and get approval on your behalf, if necessary.

If you'd like to become more involved in the activities of the organisation you could become a member for a mere:

Rs 100 - Student membership (annual)

Rs. 500 - Ordinary membership (annual)

Rs. 5000 - Life membership
