ABOUT YOUR VOLUNTEER WORK
Teaching English –
English language skills
are becoming increasingly important in virtually
every profession because it has become the international
language of business. Sadly the standard of English
taught in Sri Lanka is poor despite the fact that
a good command of the English language is required
for job seekers. Therefore, the underprivileged
people of Sri Lanka are at a complete disadvantage.
Volunteers are needed
to teach school goers and school leavers English
– in reading, comprehension and conversation.
The children may also need additional tuition in
other school subjects, which can be undertaken by
the volunteer if they are able to offer themselves
for a few extra hours. The aim of this program is
not only to make the children more familiar with
the English language but to give them the opportunity
to learn even a few words, armed with which they
feel less excluded from a world to which they otherwise
have no access.
Minimum Age – 16 yrs
and above
Skills/Experience Required – Knowledge of
spoken Sinhalese will be an advantage although not
a must
