Testimonials

I have always wanted to spend some time with elders, but logistical constraints kept me away… and then along came CharityApple.

I went through the web site, which I found to be very user friendly, and filled out a form to volunteer at the Helpage Dementia unit. I was surprised to receive a call that very evening from the lady in charge, Mrs. Gunawardena. She encouraged me to visit a unit which currently houses three ladies who are well in to there 80's.

After 3 visits, meeting up with Mariachchi (lovingly known as achchi among all), Aunty Chandra (who loves music and also suffers from arthritis) and Aunty Padma ( a former librarian of Vishaka Vidyalaya and a violinist) has reminded me how much elders need attention, love and caring.

During each visit, I take along with me little things that they like – Apples, Chocolates etc... Next weekend, however, my task becomes a bit trickier because Aunty Padma likes Custard Pudding!

Making them laugh at my silly jokes and so on, makes me feel so great that words can never explain. How can I explain what I felt, when I found out at the end of my last visit that Aunty Padma had not spoken a word to anyone during the last 3 days, but started chatting with me like a long lost friend when I went in to her room? I guess you will never know till you decide to pay these incredible ladies a visit!

'Occasionally in life there are those moments of unutterable fulfillment which cannot be completely explained by those symbols called words. These meanings can only be articulated by the inaudible language of the heart.' - Martin Luther

A well researched and comprehensive site, offering a wide variety of ways to contribute to the Sri Lankan community. It draws us closer to home, making us involved in a different and more intimate way with our society. Highlighting its needs and how we can help, and in doing so helping us mature, evolve and understand better.

Having visited the Dementia Unit at Helpage, I can say that is was in the least a very moving experience. Interacting with 3 elders, and sharing chatter, laughter and the holding of hands, seemingly performs its own very small miracles.

So make a little time, switch off from your chaotic life and help you help yourself.

CharityApple making small miracles come alive.

Alefiya
